If you are looking for adrenaline, there`s a new place to find it in Foz do Iguassu. It is the Field of Challenges, a circuit offering several types of radical sports, such as tree climbing, tirolesa, wall climbing, rappel, rafting and rock climbing. Open to people of various ages and physical conditions, the Field of Challenges is a source of joy to ecotourism and adventure tourism enthusiasts.

The requirements are minimum: you have to like the forest, rocks and water and be within the pre-established age limits. It is also recommended that you use light and comfortable clothing and shoes. Tree-climbing is one of the highlights of the activities offered. It is divided into three types of activities. Basic Elements, High Elements and Artificial Wall climbing.

All of the tree-climbing activities may be conducted individually or in groups. In addition to being fun, they hone specific skills, such as self-control and motor coordination. They also encourage the participant to reach beyond her or his expectations and limits.

The Low Elements are 11 obstacles built on eucalyptus tree trunks, steel cables, ropes, some 5 meters off the ground. The recreational activities seek to provide integration between the participants and the environment. The main objective is to develop group activities, such as services rendered to companies, schools and special groups. The exercise lasts 45 minutes, and is recommended for children above the age of 7.

The High Elements are a set of 12 sequential obstacles that reach a height of eight meters, distributed in a circuit within the forest itself. At the end of the obstacle run is the tirolesa, which is 25 meters long. The participant can also try the “Pulo do Gato” (Cat Jump), an extra obstacle, off the regular run, which is 12 meters high.

On average, the run lasts 30 minutes, and is recommended for people seven years and older. This exercise is limited, however, to adventurers who are at least 1.40 meters tall, due to the requirements of the safety equipment, which is compliant to International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) standards.

The Climbing Wall, on the other hand, is a sequence of walls with varying degrees of difficulty, ranging from very easy to difficult. Participants, who must be at least five years of age, are the ones who choose where to begin the climb. The challenge can be run by up to six people simultaneously and lasts an average of 20 minutes.

The wall is seven meters high. A number of artificial footholds are fixed in the wall, which simulate natural rock climbing holds that vary in size from large to small. The wall is also inclined to different degrees, forming “roofs” and areas called “negatives”, which provide varying degrees of difficulty to those climbing.

Rock and water – The Field of Challenges offers rappelling as well. To overcome this obstacle, the participant must walk along a suspended walkway for 360 meters inside the forest to the rappel platform. It is a 55-meter drop, with a breath-taking view of the Iguassu Falls. It can be rappelled by two people at the same time, participants must be at least seven years old, and the rappel lasts 35 minutes.

Rafting on the Iguassu River, on the other hand, takes longer, lasting about 1 hour and 40 minutes. The activity consists in taking a raft down through the rapids for about four kilometers (in certain parts one can swim in the river bed). It begins near the Falls, with a magnificent view of the plummeting water.

It should be noted that young people aged 14 to 17 can only take part in this activity with an authorization signed by their legal guardian(s). The company offers complete safety equipment, such as life jacket, helmet, as well as a medical boat and support staff.

From water to rock, this time from the bottom up. Rock climbing. There are no less than 30 climbing paths up, with fixed and moveable protection, varying from 10 to 30 meters in height, on basalt rock, which grips well and does not damage one`s hands. You can bring your own gear or rent it there.

The climb up takes from two to five hours. Youth from 10 to 17 years of age must provide an authorization signed by their legal guardian(s). There are three options for reaching the top: without a guide (for those who already know how to climb and have a buddy), with guide (for those who already know how to climb but don`t have a buddy) and what is called, “baptism” (for those who don`t know how to climb, two guides accompany the beginner).
